Which System This Covers

This analysis uses Edenix Personal — the 9 × 18 ft bed at ₹2,59,000 — because that is the size people buy to grow food. If you are an institution, produce numbers are the wrong way to judge the purchase. Skip to the institutional case →

Edenix Personal

9 × 18 ft Bed dimensions
162 sq ft Growing area
₹2,59,000 One-time cost
~250 Wh/day Energy use (est.)

Monthly Running Costs

Edenix against tending the same 9 × 18 ft bed by hand.

Cost Category By Hand With Edenix
Labour ₹3,000 – 5,000/mo ₹300 – 470/mo
Water ₹400 – 600/mo ₹200 – 300/mo
Electricity ₹100 – 200/mo (pump) ~₹45/mo
Seeds & inputs ₹300 – 500/mo ₹200 – 400/mo
Total Monthly ₹3,800 – 6,300/mo ₹745 – 1,215/mo
Monthly Saving ₹2,585 – 5,555/mo

Assumptions — check these against your own situation

  • • Manual labour at ₹300–500/day for 10 days a month of garden work
  • • Edenix labour is not zero. It still needs about 15 minutes a day of monitoring, seed and water refills and harvesting — roughly 7.5 hours a month, costed at the same daily rate
  • • Electricity at ₹6–8/kWh. Edenix energy use is the FarmBot platform figure for identical hardware; our own metering is in progress
  • • Water reduction comes from delivering to the root zone rather than across the whole bed. We have not yet published our own metered figure
  • • Growing area: 9 × 18 ft

Annual Value

Benefit Annual Value
Direct cost savings (labour, water, power, inputs) ₹31,000 – 66,700/year
Higher yield from denser, precisely spaced planting
Estimated — not yet measured on our system
₹10,000 – 25,000/year (est.)
Total, including the yield estimate ₹41,000 – 91,700/year

Why there is no “value of your time” line

  • • An earlier version of this page counted labour twice — once as a saving in the table above, and again as a separate “time saved” benefit worth ₹30,000–50,000 a year. That inflated the headline by roughly 60%. It has been removed.
  • • The hours you get back are real, but they are already priced into the labour row.

Payback Period

On a ₹2,59,000 system

4–8 Years

On direct cost savings alone. 3–6 years if the yield improvement holds up.

The frame and motors should outlast that comfortably. Everything after payback is saving.

If You Are a School, ITI or University

Do not justify this purchase on vegetables. A 4.5 × 9 ft classroom bed will never pay for itself in produce, and any ROI table claiming otherwise is one your procurement officer should reject.

The return on an Edenix Institutional is teaching hours. It is the one piece of equipment in the lab that covers mechanics, electronics, programming, data handling, soil science and sustainability at once — and it keeps running a live experiment when the students have gone home.

Basis Working
System cost ₹3,49,000 one-time, no subscription
Service life 10 years — conservative for an aluminium frame under cover
Students reached 150 per year × 10 years = 1,500 student-years
Cost per student reached about ₹233

Adjust these for your institution

  • • Put in your own annual student numbers. A KVK running farmer training days will be much higher; a small STEM elective lower
  • • Curriculum, staff training and the on-campus Raspberry Pi 5 are included in that price, not billed on top
  • • We supply a written budget-justification document for your finance office. Ask for it with your quote.
